8th-Intro to Matter
Phases of matter, phase changes, and density.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space |
| Mass | The amount of matter |
| Volume | The amount of space an object takes up |
| Weight | The measure of the force of gravity |
| Density | The amount of mass per volume of a substance |
| Density Formula(s) | D=M/V M=D*V V=M/D |
| More Dense Substances... | Sink |
| Less Dense Substances... | Float |
| Solids | -Definite shape and volume -Densely packed in regular patterns and vibrates in place |
| Liquids | -No definite shape yet a definite volume. -Closely packed but slide past each other as they move |
| Gases | -No definite shape or volume -Loosely packed and bounce around randomly |
| Plasma | A stream of highly charged ions (give off light, extreme temps, excited gas molecules) |
| Items in Plasma Phase | Lightning & stars |
| Transforms One Phase of Matter into Another (By Addition or Removal) | Thermal energy |
| Melting | Solid to a liquid when thermal energy is added |
| Freezing | Liquid to solid when thermal energy is removed |
| Vaporizing (Evaporation) | Liquid to gas when thermal energy is added (Evaporation occurs only at the surface) |
| Condensing (Condensation) | Gas to liquid when thermal energy is removed |
| Subliming (Sublimation) | Solid to gas when thermal energy is added |
| Deposition | Gas to solid when thermal energy is removed |
| Phase Changes Show on Graphs as... | Plateaus with no temperature change |
| State of Matter at First Slope (on Upward Graphs) | Solid |
| State of Matter at Second Slope (on Upward Graphs) | Liquid |
| State of Matter at Third Slope (on Upward Graphs) | Gas |
| Phase Change Happening at First Plateau | Melting or freezing |
| Phase Change Happening at Second Plateau | Vaporization or condensation |
| Crystalline Solids | A solid with particles arranged in a regular pattern |
| Amorphous Solids | A solid with particles not arranged in a regular pattern |
| The Temperature Where a Solid Becomes a Liquid | Melting Point |
| The Temperature Where a Liquid Becomes a Gas | Boiling Point |
| The Temperature Where a Liquid Becomes a Solid | Freezing Point |
| Viscosity | A fluid's resistance to flowing |
