Chapter 4 Vocabulary

| abolition | the act of abolishing or ending a system or practice (ex. slavery) |
| tariff | a tax paid on goods that come from another country |
| secede | to leave |
| confederacy | a loose union of groups or states |
| civil war | a war between groups in the same country |
| emancipation | to set free |
| blockade | a line of ships that keeps goods from entering or leaving a place |
| reconstruction | the time after the civil war where the United States was changing and rebuilding |
| carpetbagger | business people, government officials and teachers that traveled from the north to the south to profit from Reconstruction |
| black codes | laws that limited the rights of African-Americans |
| Freedmen's Bureau | A government agency that helped formerly enslaved African Americans and poor white Americans buy land and find work after the civil war. |
| sharecropping | a system where a landowner gave a worker land , a small house and sold them farm tools and supplies. |
| segregation | a system that kept African Americans separated from white people |
