Exam 3 - motivation
Intro to Psychology
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| what is the drive-reduction theory? | physiological needs (such as food, rest, or water) create a motivated state called a drive (like hunger, sleep, or thirst), which motivates us to reduce the need. |
| what are we motivated by in the drive-reduction theory? | we are motivated by the need to maintain homeostasis. |
| what is homeostasis in the drive-reduction theory? | the maintenance of a steady internal state |
| what are drive-reducing behaviors? | behaviors we engage in to reduce a physiological drive (e.g., eating, drinking, sleeping) |
| what are incentives in the drive-reduction theory? | positive or negative stimuli in our environment that influence specific behaviors chosen |
| what are Maslow's hierarchy of needs? | human needs are displayed as a pyramid. More basic needs (biological) are at the bottom of the pyramid & get more complex (need to realize our potential, to have meaning) as they move up. Once we fulfill a lower step, we shift our focus to the next step |
| what is the instinct theory? | there is a genetic basis for species-typical behavior that doesn't require learning (ex. infant rooting for a nipple) |
| what is the arousal theory? | our need to maintain an optimal level of arousal motivates behaviors that meet no physiological need ( our desire to explore, go on rollercoasters, or meditate when overstimulated) |
