|---|---|
| Volcano | A weak spot in the crust where magma has come to the surface |
| Magma | The molten mixture of rock-forming substances, gases, and water from the mantle |
| lava | liquid magma that reaches the surface ; also the rock formed when liquid lava hardens |
| Ring of fire | A major belt of volcanoes that rims the Pacific ocean. |
| Island arc | A string of islands formed by the volcanoes along a deep ocean trench |
| hot spot | an area where magma from deep within the mantle melts though the crust above it |
| pipe | A pipe is a tubular section or hollow cylinder, usually but not necessarily of circular cross-section, used mainly to convey substances which can flow |
| vent | an opening at the earth's surface from which volcanic material, as lava, steam, or gas, is emitted. |
| lava flow | Lava flows are streams of molten rock that pour or ooze from an erupting vent |
| crater | A crater is a bowl-shaped depression, or hollowed-out area, produced by the impact of a meteorite, volcanic activity, or an explosion. |
| pahoehoe | basaltic lava having a smooth, often billowy, shiny surface. Thick, folded lava |
| Aa | A slow-moving type of lava that hardens to form rough chunks; cooler than pahoehoe. |
| pyroclastic flow | A pyroclastic flow is a hot (typically >800 °C, or >1,500 °F ), chaotic mixture of rock fragments, gas, and ash that travels rapidly (tens of meters per second) away from a volcanic vent or collapsing flow front. |
| active | Active Physical Science content is based on the research on how students learn, encapsulated in the 7E Instructional Model |
| dormat | any state of reduced metabolic activity; |
| extinct | occurs when there are no more individuals of that species alive anywhere in the world - the species has died out |
| geyser | a gas-fired water heater through which water flows as it is rapidly heated. |
| geothermal energy | Geothermal energy is heat energy from the earth |
| batholith | A mass of rock formed when a large body of magma cooled inside the crust. |
| shield volcano | A wide, gently sloping mountain made of layers of lava and formed by quiet eruptions. |
| cinder cone volcano | A steep, cone-shaped hill or mountain made of volcanic ash, Cinders, and bombs piled up around a volcano's opening. |
| composite volcano | A tall, cone-shaped mountain in which layers of lava alternate with layers of ash and other volcanic material. |
| caldera | The large hole at the top of a volcano formed when the roof of a volcano's magma chamber collapses. |
| volcanic neck | A deposit of hardened magma in a volcano's pipe. |
