Chapter 3 vocab

Chapter 3 vocab study guide

TermDefinition
Volcano A weak spot in the crust where magma has come to the surface
Magma The molten mixture of rock-forming substances, gases, and water from the mantle
lava liquid magma that reaches the surface ; also the rock formed when liquid lava hardens
Ring of fire A major belt of volcanoes that rims the Pacific ocean.
Island arc A string of islands formed by the volcanoes along a deep ocean trench
hot spot an area where magma from deep within the mantle melts though the crust above it
pipe A pipe is a tubular section or hollow cylinder, usually but not necessarily of circular cross-section, used mainly to convey substances which can flow
vent an opening at the earth's surface from which volcanic material, as lava, steam, or gas, is emitted.
lava flow Lava flows are streams of molten rock that pour or ooze from an erupting vent
crater A crater is a bowl-shaped depression, or hollowed-out area, produced by the impact of a meteorite, volcanic activity, or an explosion.
pahoehoe basaltic lava having a smooth, often billowy, shiny surface. Thick, folded lava
Aa A slow-moving type of lava that hardens to form rough chunks; cooler than pahoehoe.
pyroclastic flow A pyroclastic flow is a hot (typically >800 °C, or >1,500 °F ), chaotic mixture of rock fragments, gas, and ash that travels rapidly (tens of meters per second) away from a volcanic vent or collapsing flow front.
active Active Physical Science content is based on the research on how students learn, encapsulated in the 7E Instructional Model
dormat any state of reduced metabolic activity;
extinct occurs when there are no more individuals of that species alive anywhere in the world - the species has died out
geyser a gas-fired water heater through which water flows as it is rapidly heated.
geothermal energy Geothermal energy is heat energy from the earth
batholith A mass of rock formed when a large body of magma cooled inside the crust.
shield volcano A wide, gently sloping mountain made of layers of lava and formed by quiet eruptions.
cinder cone volcano A steep, cone-shaped hill or mountain made of volcanic ash, Cinders, and bombs piled up around a volcano's opening.
composite volcano A tall, cone-shaped mountain in which layers of lava alternate with layers of ash and other volcanic material.
caldera The large hole at the top of a volcano formed when the roof of a volcano's magma chamber collapses.
volcanic neck A deposit of hardened magma in a volcano's pipe.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
