Union Disease Detect

Helpful Vocabulary for ESO Disease Detectives

TermDefinition
Outbreak When many people in a place get sick with the same disease at the same time, often suddenly
Communicable This kind of disease is one that can be spread from one person to another, like a cold or the flu.
Virus microscopic germ that can make you sick; it is NOT considered to be a living organism. This type of germ needs a host to replicate (grow and reproduce); antiviral medications are used to fight infection of this kind
Asthma A chronic illness that makes it hard to breathe. A person with this might experience coughing, wheezing, or shortness of breath when exercising or when around certain allergens like dust, smoke, or pet dander
Average This is the number you get when you add up a group of numbers and divide by that how many numbers there are. It's like finding the middle of the group.
Epidemic When a disease spreads quickly and affects many people in a certain area, like a town or country.
Non-communicable A disease of this type cannot be spread from person to person, like cancer or heart disease.
Pathogen A tiny germ, like a virus or bacteria, that can cause diseases.
Ratio A way to show how things are related. For example, if there are 2 boys and 3 girls, the ratio of boys to girls is 2:3.
Contagious This means something can be spread from one person to another, like a cold or the flu or chickenpox.
Allergen Something that can cause an allergic reaction in a person. Examples are pollen, certain foods, or pet fur.
Bacteria microscopic germ that can make you sick; it IS considered to be a living organism and does NOT need a host to replicate. Some can be beneficial; those that are not beneficial are treated with antibiotics.
Fraction Showing part of a whole. For example, 1/2 means one part out of two equal parts
Chronic Something that lasts a long time or keeps coming back. Examples of chronic illnesses are asthma and diabetes
Congenital disorder A health problem that someone is born with, like a heart defect or cleft palate.
Germ A microscopic thing that can make you sick. Germs are found everywhere and can spread easily.
Fever This is when your body temperature gets higher than normal because your body is fighting an infection
Comparison This is when you look at two or more things to see how they are similar or different.
Acute When something happens suddenly and is usually very serious, but only lasts for a short time (like an injury or headache)
Environmental Toxin This is a harmful substance in the air, water, or soil that can make you sick
Carcinogen Something that can cause cancer.
Cancer A disease where some cells in the body grow out of control. These cells can form lumps or spread to other parts of the body.
Estimate An educated guess about how much or how many something is, based on what you know
Vaccination An injection (shot) that helps protect you from getting certain diseases by teaching your body how to fight them
Disease Vector Something like a mosquito or tick that spreads germs from one person or animal to another
Mold Type of fungus that grows in damp places. It can look like fuzzy spots and sometimes causes allergic reations
Rash Red, itchy, or bumpy skin, usually because of an infection, allergy or irritation
Likelihood How likely or probable something is to happen. If there is a high likelihood, it means it is very likely to happen.
