| Puberty | A period of rapid body changes, sexual maturation (early adolescence) |
| Sexual Socialization | A culture’s blueprints to sexual feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. Basically learning values and norms of sexual behaviors. |
| Precocious Puberty | Puberty that’s 7 years earlier then the average age , RIP |
| Secondary sex characteristics | Physical features that show puberty has begun (growth spurt, body hair, breast development, mature genital organs) |
| adrenarche | Adrenal glands mature (ages 6-8), “first markers of pubertal development” |
| gonadarche | Earliest gonadal changes, ovaries and testes begin to grow |
| spermarche | First ejaculation #wankingoffmate, usually happens when boys are sleeping lol |
| menarche | Women’s first period |
| secular trend | As time goes by, the age of getting your first period declines (20th century) |
| emotional literacy | Understanding your feelings and other people’s feelings. Being able to name them and handle them In a good way |
| sexual expression in adolescence | Normative: solitary masturbation, shows interest in porn, kissing/holding hands Atypical: sexually explicit threats, exhibitionism, sexual harassment |
| noncoital sexual behaviors | Sexual behaviors that don’t involve penetration of a vagina by a penis, #nobabiestoday |
| masturbation | release of sexual tension, can be very educational |
| sexual intercourse | Sex, penetration of a vagina by a penis (super intimate) |
| sources of sex information | family, peers, media, and school |
| peer influences | usually a second source of info (friends) |
| parental influences | usually taboo |
| religious influences | Some religions promote abstinence, define accepted sexual relationships, determine what are the rights and wrongs of sexual behaviors |
| abstinence-only sex ed | fear based, provide little to no info for LGBTQ youth, NOT SUCCESSFUL |
| comprehensive sex ed | accurate info, opportunities to explore sexual attitudes/values, interpersonal skills, and sexual responsibility |
| age of consent | age when a person can legally agree to have sex |
| statutory rape | sex with an underage minor (regardless of consent and age difference) |
