Energy
Forms of Energy, Energy Transformations, Heat Transfer
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| energy transfer | Movement of energy from one system to another. |
| heat | Energy transferred between two objects of different temperatures; heat ALWAYS transfers from warmer to cooler matter until all matter in an area have the same temperature |
| kinetic energy | energy of motion |
| matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space |
| states of matter | Distinct forms of matter known in everyday experience: solid, liquid, and gas; also referred to as phases of matter. |
| temperature | Average kinetic energy of all the particles in a material; measured by a thermometer in degrees (usually degrees Celsius or degrees Fahrenheit) |
| thermal energy | The total kinetic (motion) energy of tiny particles that make up matter. The faster the particles move, the warmer the matter becomes. |
| radiation | heat transfer through electromagnetic waves through a vacuum |
| conduction | Heat transfer by direct contact |
| convection | heat transfer by the movement of a heated fluid (gas or liquid) due to differences in density |
| A bicyclist pedaling up a hill is what kind of energy | kinetic energy |
| A volleyball player spiking a ball is what kind of energy | kinetic energy |
| The chemical bonds in sugar is what kind of energy | potential energy |
| Walking down the street is what kind of energy | kinetic energy |
| Sitting on the top of a tree is what kind of energy | potential energy |
| Potential energy is... | stored energy that results from the position or shape of an object |
| gravitational potential energy | potential energy that depends upon an object's height |
| elastic potential energy | the potential energy associated with objects that can be stretched or compressed |
| mechanical energy | kinetic or potential energy associated with the motion or position of an object |
| electrical energy | The energy of electric charges |
| energy transformation | A change from one form of energy to another |
| law of conservation of energy states.... | Energy cannot be created or destroyed. |
| nuclear energy | the potential energy stored in the nucleus of an atom |
| Kinetic energy is... | the energy an object has due to its motion |
| sound energy is... | the energy of vibrations. Energy we can hear |
| How do the molecules move in a cold object? | Molecules move slowly, because there is not a lot of thermal/heat energy. |
| How do molecules move in a hot object? | Molecules move quickly, because there is a lot of thermal/heat energy. |
| Convection | Hot air/water rises, Cold air/water sinks |
| How does heat flow between objects? | From something warmer to something colder. |
