Oligarchs | A small group of powerful and wealthy individuals who gained ownership and control of important sectors of Russia's economy in the context of the privatization of state assets in the 1990s. |
Charm Offensive | A campaign of flattery, friendliness, and cajolement designed to achieve the support or agreement of others. Part of Modern Russia's method to encourage countries ignored by or unfriendly towards the U.S. to support them. |
Chernobyl | The nuclear power plant in the Ukraine that suffered two large explosions which released massive amounts of radioactive materials. It is the worst nuclear accident in history and thousands were and continue to be impacted by the disaster. |
Authoritarian | like a dictator, a single person has full control of the government. |
High Context Culture | People rely heavily on situational cues for meaning when communicating with others, and often speak in indirect ways. |
Supra | A traditional Georgian feast that includes many courses and toasts |
Folk Culture | Culture traditionally practiced by a small, homogeneous, rural group living in relative isolation from other groups. |
Silk Road | An ancient trade route between China and the Mediterranean Sea extending some 6,440 km (4,000 mi) and linking China with the Roman Empire. Marco Polo followed the route on his journey to Cathay. |
Balkans | Geopolitical and cultural region of southeastern Europe. Greece and the region North of Greece. |
