Absolute Monarchy | A system of government in which the head of state is a hereditary position and the king or queen has almost complete power |
Eastern Orthodox Church | a Christian church that grew out of Christianity in Eastern Europe and present-day Turkey. Originated in the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) Empire. |
Pogrom | an organized massacre of a particular ethnic group, in particular that of Jews in Russia or eastern Europe. |
Great Schism | the official split between the Roman Catholic and Byzantine churches that occurred in 1054 |
Icons | Religious images used by East Orthodox Christians to aid their prayers. |
Ballet | A dance form featuring a staged presentation of group or solo dancing with music, costumes, and scenery. |
Ottoman Empire | Major Islamic state centered on Anatolia that came to include the Balkans, the Near East, and much of North Africa. |
Silk Road | An ancient trade route between China and the Mediterranean Sea extending some 6,440 km (4,000 mi) and linking China with the Roman Empire. Marco Polo followed the route on his journey to Cathay. |
Bosnian Genocide | Between April 1992 and November 1995, Serbia set out to "ethnically cleanse" Bosnian territory by systematically killing Muslims and Croats. |
