Taiga | A region of evergreen, coniferous forest below the arctic and subarctic tundra regions |
Distance Decay | The effects of distance on interaction, generally the greater the distance the less interaction. Especially a challenge for large countries that cover great distance. |
Trans-Siberian Railway | A rail line built between 1891 and 1904 to connect European Russia with Russian ports on the pacific ocean. |

Northern European Plain | Region of Europe with the most fertile farmland reaching from France to Russia. |
Slavic | Ethnic group of indo-European descent which includes Russians, Bulgarians, and Poles. |
Kievan Rus | First civilization in Russia & Slavic Eastern Europe that was greatly influenced by the Byzantine Empire. |
Byzantine Empire | (330-1453) The eastern half of the Roman Empire, which survived after the fall of the Western Empire at the end of the 5th century C.E. Its capital was Constantinople, named after the Emperor Constantine. |
Mongol Conquests | In the 1200s, the Mongol Golden Horde conquered the territory that would become Russia. Russia was ruled by city princes who paid tribute to Mongol rulers until Ivan the 3rd overthrew the Mongols in the 1400s. |
