Term | Definition |

Colonization | One country taking over another area to be used for their benefit |
Enlightenment | A movement in the 18th century that advocated the use of reason in the reexamining accepted ideas and social institutions. |
Federal Government | A form of government in which powers are divided between a central government and several local governments. |
Dominion | An area controlled by an empire with some right to govern itself. A colony with limited oversight. |
French & Indian War | (1754-1763) War fought in the colonies between the English and the French for possession of the Ohio Valley area. The English won. |

Transcontinental | extending across a continent |
Great Depression | the economic crisis beginning with the stock market crash in 1929 and continuing through the 1930s |
Conservation | Protecting and preserving natural resources and the environment |
Hurricane | A severe storm that develops over tropical oceans and whose strong winds of more than 120 km/h spiral in toward the intensely low-pressure storm center |
