Colonization One country taking over another area to be used for their benefit
Enlightenment A movement in the 18th century that advocated the use of reason in the reexamining accepted ideas and social institutions.
Federal Government A form of government in which powers are divided between a central government and several local governments.
Dominion An area controlled by an empire with some right to govern itself. A colony with limited oversight.
French & Indian War (1754-1763) War fought in the colonies between the English and the French for possession of the Ohio Valley area. The English won.
Indigenous native to a certain area
Bering Strait Land Bridge How early Americans reached North and South America
Transcontinental extending across a continent
Great Depression the economic crisis beginning with the stock market crash in 1929 and continuing through the 1930s
Conservation Protecting and preserving natural resources and the environment
Hurricane A severe storm that develops over tropical oceans and whose strong winds of more than 120 km/h spiral in toward the intensely low-pressure storm center
