| Animist | religious beliefs in which nature, such as animals and mountains, has spirits |
| Reservation | land set aside by the United States government for Native Americans |
| Federal Republic | government in which power is divided between the national, or federal, government and the states |
| Enlightenment | a movement that emphasized science and reason as guides to help see the world more clearly |
| Secular Nation | government not ruled by religion |
| First Amendment | The constitutional amendment that establishes the four great liberties: freedom of the press, of speech, of religion, and of assembly. |
| Charter of Rights & Freedoms | addition to the Canadian constitution that guarantees fundamental freedoms to all Canadians |
| Protestant Reformation | A religious movement of the 16th century that began as an attempt to reform the Roman Catholic Church and resulted in the creation of Protestant churches. |
| Dominion | A colony with limited right to self rule within its own territory. |
| Atheist | Person who does not believe in God |
