Heat Transfer

TermDefinition
What are the 3 methods of heat transfer? conduction, convection, radiation
What is conduction? heat transfer through a substance from direct contact whend there is a temperature difference
Fact about molecules "The molecules in the warmer object vibrator faster than the ones in the cooler object."
What happens when faster-vibrating molecules and cooler molecules collide? The cooler molecules vibrate faster, making the cooler object wamer.
How is conduction mainly received? by touching hot objects
What is convection? heat transfer by movement of a heated liquid: the hotter portions rise and the colder sink.
When does convection happen? when particles with more thermal energy in a liquid or gas replace particles with less thermal energy.
What are 4 convection examples? boiling water, ice melting, ocean currents, hot air ballons
What is radiation? energy that is transported through space by electromagnetic waves.
Radiation transfers energy without a medium because... electromagnetic waves carry heat.
In contrast to conduction, ... are not transmitted by the vibration of particles electromagnetic waves
What are the 2 characteristics of everything in the electromagnetic spectrum? they're radiation they do not require a medium to travel & transfer energy
How does heat transfer by radiation differ from conduction and convection? Heat transfer by radiation does not involve particles.
What is a conductor? A conductor is a material or device that conducts or transmits heat, or easily allows electrical charge to move through it.
Name 5 materials that are good condutors. metal, aluminum, copper, gold, silver
What do these materials contain? free electrons that collide with their atoms and transfer heat.
What is increased when there are more free electrons? conductivity
What is an insulator? a material or an object that slows energy transfer and the easy passage of heat, electricity, light, or sound
Name 3 materials that are good insulators. Fiberglass, mineral wool, natural fibers
Why are these materials good insulators? their open structure absorbs amount of air to regulate heat
What makes a material a good conductor? if it allows electron circulation and increases heat transfer
What makes a material a good insulators? if its atoms have "tightly bound electrons." electrons do not collide with neighboring atoms. decreases heat transfer

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
