Level 1 terms/definition - Classification of Matter

TermDefinition
Matter Any substance that has mass and volume
Atom smallest particle of matter that has its own physical and chemical properties
Molecule Multiple atoms (same or different) chemically bonded together. Can be the same type of an atom
Element A substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means
Compound Two or more elements chemically bonded together
Mixture Two or more substances physically combined (not chemically combined)
Homogeneous Mixture A mixture with a uniform composition
Heterogeneous Mixture A mixture in which the composition is not uniform
