Sensory Memory A brief image of what we see or what we hear
Iconic Memory a visual memory that lasts for less than a half a second.
Echoic Memory An auditory memory that lasts for up to 4 seconds
Selective Attention If you pay attention to information in a sensory memory it turns into a short term memory
Working Memory (STM), Temporary storage of information for conscious processing
Limited Deviation How long you are working with the information. The information will last up to 20 sec if we do nothing with information
Maintenance Rehearsal If you repeat information to yourself, the information will last more that 20 seconds.
Limited Capacity How much information you can remember, the capacity is between 5 and 9 items
chunking A memory strategy where one combines individual bits of information into larger units (chunks)
Primacy Effect Remembering things in the beginning of the series better due to maintenance rehearsal
Recency Effect Remembering things at the end because they are fresh and new
Long Term Memory Has a unlimited capacity to remember and has an extended duration
Encoding Process of converting information into memory
Serial Position Effect Our tendency to recall best the last and first items in a list
Semantic Information Facts and concepts encoded into memory
Elaborative Rehearsal Make associations with info already in LTM
Procedural Information Skills learned through practice, not effortful encoding
Episodic Information Memory for events we live through (significant, meaningful, emotional)
