Adjudication The process by which a prescription is submitted electronically to a third-party payer for the pharmacy to be reimbursed for the medication dispensed
Auxiliary Label A label that provides supplementary information about proper and safe administration, use, or storage of a medication
Bank Identification Number Six-digit number, found on a prescription drug card, which is used for routing and identification in order to process a prescription claim
Dispense as Written (DAW) Code A numeric set of codes, created by the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP), that is used when filling prescriptions; they can affect reimbursement amounts from insurance companies
Drug Utilization Evaluation (DUE) An authorized, structured, ongoing review of health care provider prescribing, pharmacist dispensing, and patient use of medication
e-Prescribing The computer-to-computer transfer of prescription data between pharmacies, prescribers, and payers
Help Desk a 24/7 toll-free hotline to an insurance company for pharmacists that can address specific questions relating to insurance claims and coverage, as well as pharmacy-specific inquiries
Inscription` The name, dosage form, strength, and quantity of the medication prescribed
National Provider Identifier (NPI) Unique 10-digit identification number for covered health care providers that is issued by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
Refill Permission by a prescriber to replenish a prescription
Repackaging Act of reducing the amount of medication taken from a bulk bottle
Chain pharmacy Corporate-owned group of pharmacies that share a brand name and central managment and usually have standardized business methods and practices
Nonproprietary (generic) name Nonproprietary name assigned to a drug
Superscription Heading of a prescription represented by the Latin symbol Rx meaning "take thou" or "you take"
Franchise Form of business organization in which a firm that already has a successful product or service enters into a continuing contractual relationship with other businesses operating under the franchisor's trade name and usuallly with the franchisor's ....
Signatura (signa or sig) Directions on a prescription that explain how the patient is to take the prescribed medication; a Latin expression meaning to "write on label"
Proprietary (brand or trade) name Trademark name under which a drug product is marketed
Sole proprietorship unincorporated business owned by one person
Therapeutic alliance A trust relationship between a health care professional and a patient, incorporating patient perceptions of the acceptability of interventions and mutually agreed upon goals for treatment
