| context clues | Hints in a text that help define unfamiliar words. |
| metaphor | Compares two things that are not alike by stating that one thing is the other. |
| antonym | A word that has an opposite meaning to another word. |
| prefix | An affix attached to the beginning of a word. |
| compound sentence | Made of two or more independent clauses, usually joined by a conjunction. |
| nonrestrictive element | A word, phrase, or clause that adds information to a sentence but is not required for the sentence to be complete. |
| pronoun | Replaces a noun |
| synonym | A word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another word or phrase. |
| personification | Giving human qualities to non-human things |
| simile | A figure of speech comparing two unlike things using like or as. |
| root | A word that has no other parts added on. |
| possessive noun | A noun that shows ownership. |
| analogy | A comparison to say something is like something else. |
| positive connotation | A word that gives pleasant emotions. |
| affix | A suffix or prefix. |
