Stars and HR Diagram

Stars and the HR Diagram

TermDefinition
star A massive, luminous sphere of burning gas that is held together by gravity.
gravity A force of attraction between objects that is due to their masses.
mass Amount of matter in an object; bigger stars will have more; smaller stars will have less.
nebula A large cloud of dust and gas in space. New stars can be born here. It is also what is left when a star dies.
main sequence star A star in the main part of its life, our sun is in this phase.
red giant A smaller main sequence star becomes this later in its life. It is now bigger, brighter, and red.
supergiant A larger main sequence star becomes this later in its life. It is now really big and really bright.
white dwarf A small, hot, dim star that is the leftover center of an old red giant star.
dim Does not give off much light. Stars at the bottom of the HR Diagram
supernova A powerful explosion that occurs when a supergiant star dies, releasing lots of dust and gas. The center of a supernova can turn into a neutron star or a black hole.
black hole An object in space whose gravity is so strong not even light can escape. Some supernovas can turn into black holes.
