What motivates us?

TermDefinition
Motivation All factors that lead to our behaviors.
Drive Theory Biological needs leads to our behaviors
Drive state of tension we experience when we have a biological need
Incentive theory conditioned reinforcers lead to behaviors
Extrinsic Motivation Motivation that comes from outside of ourselves
Intrinsic Motivation Motivation that comes from within you, self-rewarding behavior
Arousal Theory We might participate in behaviors to obtain some level of arousal (excitement)
Sensation Seekers Prefer activities that result in a high level of excitement, like cliff diving
Hierarchy of Needs Maslow's Famous theory which stated that we have multiple levels to our needs. These levels include: Physiological needs, Safety Needs, Social Needs, Esteem, and Self-Actualization
Physiological Needs Our basic needs, like food and water
Social Needs Needs that include belongingness (having good relationships) and love (having a close / caring relationship with a significant other). This includes social networking, we enjoy being connected to others
Esteem Being approved of and recognized by others. Very social, and is based on others. This can lead to having a need for achievement,
Growth Mindset People with a high need for achievement
Self Actualization Reaching your full potential as a person. You have already maximized your strengths
Energy Homeostasis A baseline body weight
Negative Energy Balance When the intake of food is less than the amount of food used for energy
Positive Energy Balance Occurs when the intake of food is greater than the amount of food used for energy
Satiated Feeling full
Sedentary Lifestyle Not exercising during leisure time
