What motivates us?

| Motivation | All factors that lead to our behaviors. |
| Drive Theory | Biological needs leads to our behaviors |
| Drive | state of tension we experience when we have a biological need |
| Incentive theory | conditioned reinforcers lead to behaviors |
| Extrinsic Motivation | Motivation that comes from outside of ourselves |
| Intrinsic Motivation | Motivation that comes from within you, self-rewarding behavior |
| Arousal Theory | We might participate in behaviors to obtain some level of arousal (excitement) |
| Sensation Seekers | Prefer activities that result in a high level of excitement, like cliff diving |
| Hierarchy of Needs | Maslow's Famous theory which stated that we have multiple levels to our needs. These levels include: Physiological needs, Safety Needs, Social Needs, Esteem, and Self-Actualization |
| Physiological Needs | Our basic needs, like food and water |
| Social Needs | Needs that include belongingness (having good relationships) and love (having a close / caring relationship with a significant other). This includes social networking, we enjoy being connected to others |
| Esteem | Being approved of and recognized by others. Very social, and is based on others. This can lead to having a need for achievement, |
| Growth Mindset | People with a high need for achievement |
| Self Actualization | Reaching your full potential as a person. You have already maximized your strengths |
| Energy Homeostasis | A baseline body weight |
| Negative Energy Balance | When the intake of food is less than the amount of food used for energy |
| Positive Energy Balance | Occurs when the intake of food is greater than the amount of food used for energy |
| Satiated | Feeling full |
| Sedentary Lifestyle | Not exercising during leisure time |
