Protist and fungi
science Ch. 7
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| protist | Any organism that is not an animal, plant, bacteria, or fungus. |
| ciliates | paramecium that has between 10,000 and 14,000 cilia. |
| amoeboid protist | an animal like protist capable of an oozing kind of movement using psuedopods. Many have shells. |
| plant like protist | algae- photosynthetic protist |
| fungus-like protist | causes late season potato blight. fungus- like protist. |
| slime mold | exist as an individual cell but when food is scarce, the cells signal each other to clump together into larger masses that move and act as one body |
| microporidians | animal parasites, and most of their host are insects |
| how do protist move? | 1.whip like structure called flagella 2.numerous, hair-like structures, called cilia 3.forms a bulge in its cell membrane. Cytoplasm streams into the bulge (pseudopods) |
| how do protists get energy? | 1. eat other protists (consumers) 2.eat bacteria (consumers) 3.eat debris that floats their way (consumers) 4.photosynthesis(producers) |
| how do protists reproduce? | -most reproduce asexually by mitosis (about every three days) -some sexually from gametes that later fuse to make a new organism -conjugation- join oral groves together and exchange DNA |
| How are protist important in our environment? | -plantom-float near the ocean's surface and directly or indirectly is the food source for most marine animals |
| how are protist important in our environment? | -photosynthetic protist are a source of oxygen |
| how are protist important in our environment? | remains- chalk, limestone, diatomaceus earth are used as building material, soil conditioners, toothpaste, polishing agents |
| how are protist dangerous/harmful in our environment? | -causes serious diseases such as malaria, amoebic dysentary, african sleeping sickness |
| how are protist dangerous/harmful in our environment? | -red tide that kills fish |
| how are protist dangerous/harmful in our environment? | -shell fish that is harvested during and shortly after red tide is poisonous o humans |
| Are protist simple life forms? | -protist can do all things with one cell! -they display a wide range of behaviors-hunt, avoid predators, build protective structures, etc. |
| Fungi | -has cell walls -produces spores -eukaryotic microorganism |
| spores | reproductive cell produced by fungi that is capable of developing into a new individual fungi |
| sac fungi | largest phylum of fungi and produces spores in sac like structures an example is yeast |
| club fungi | club-shaped basidia, which produces spores |
| zygote fungi | bread molds |
| chytrid fungi | produces spores in pot shaped structure. kills millions of frogs. they however serve as decomposers |
| imperfect fungi | no known form of sexual reproduction. commonly known as mold. reproduce asexually |
| why are fungi not considered animals | fungal cells have cell walls. animal cells do not have true cell walls |
| hyphae | filaments composed of long cells bound together |
| stipe | stalk of a mushroom |
| fruiting body | part of the fungi that produces spores |
| gills | structure on the underside of a mushroom's cap containing cells that produce spores |
| cap | umbrella shape structure at the top of a mushroom |
| how do fungi obtain energy | look at definition in study guide(page. 6) |
| how do fungi reproduce | -perfect fungi-asexually and sexually -imperfect fungi-asexually |
