Newton's 1st Law

7th Grade Unit 9

TermDefinition
Newton's First Law of Motion A body remains in the state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line unless and until an external force acts on it
Inertia When no outside force is acting on an object, it will continue to move in a straight line in whatever direction it was already moving.
Frictional Force the force generated by two surfaces that contacts and slide against each other
Magnetic Force attraction or repulsion that arises between electrically charged particles because of their motion
Air Resistance Force of air pushing against a moving object
Normal Force the force that a surface employs on any other body
Gravitational Force An invisible force that pulls objects towards each other
Newtons the unit of force in the metric system equal to the force required to impart an acceleration of one meter per second per second to a mass of one kilogram
Applied Force A contact force that is applied from external means
Equilibrium A state of a system where all forces acting upon it are balanced
Unbalanced Force A force leading to a change in motion
Net Force The sum of all forces acting on an object
Balanced Forces a set of forces acting on an object such that they do not affect its motion.
Vectors A mathematical object that has a magnitude and direction
Force Diagram Used to show the force and direction of force
Motion Change of position of an object with respect to time
Force Push or pull on an object

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
