Workplace Safety

| Biological Hazards | Living things that can cause sickness or disease. |
| Safety Hazards | Can cause immediate accidents and injuries. |
| Remove the Hazard | Eliminate the hazard from the workplace altogether. |
| Improve Work Policies and Procedures | Safety policies can reduce your exposure to hazards. |
| Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) | Equipment worn to protect from hazards. |
| Emergency | Unplanned event that harms or threatens people, property, or the environment. |
| Federal and state labor laws | Laws that protect workers' rights and safety. |
| OSHA | Occupational Safety and Health Administration; enforces workplace safety standards. |
| Define the problem | Clearly describe the safety issue. |
| Access to Medical and Exposure Records | OSHA standard allowing employees to access exposure and medical records. |
| Toxic Substances | Harmful chemicals. |
| Harmful Physical Agents | Noise, heat, cold, etc. that can cause harm. |
| Preserve and maintain records | Keep accurate medical and exposure records. |
| Inform workers | Tell workers about their right to access exposure and medical records. |
| Ergonomic Design | Designing workstations to prevent discomfort and injury. Helps reduce worker fatigue, absenteeism, and healthcare costs. |
| Job Control | Amount of influence a worker has over their work. Low job control can contribute to stress and decreased productivity. |
| Hearing Protectors | Equipment to protect ears from loud noise. Important to prevent hearing loss, a permanent injury. |
| Evacuation Routes | Planned paths to exit a building safely during an emergency. Knowing evacuation routes is crucial for a quick and safe escape. |
| Emergency Action Plan | Plan outlining actions to take during emergencies. Essential for minimizing risk and ensuring everyone knows what to do. |
| Report a Safety Problem | Inform supervisor or appropriate authority about safety hazards. Empowers workers to contribute to a safe workplace. |
| Choose your goals. | Define what you want to achieve when addressing a safety issue. Helps focus efforts on finding a solution. |
