sex Biologically a male or female
gender How a person sees themselves as a male, female, or neither
gender identity The sense of being a boy/girl, man/women
gender role Women= kitchen , men= money makers, the way people think women or men should act because of their gender
cisgender When a male (assigned at birth) feels like a male, a women (assigned at birth) feels like a women
sexual differentiation how a person’s body grows to become male or female. It includes changes that happen because of hormones, making the body look and work like a boy or a girl.
intersexuality when someone is born with body parts or traits that don’t clearly fit as just male or female. Being between male or female.
androgen-insensitivity syndrome (AIS) Genetically male that is assigned female at birth (underdeveloped genitals)
congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) genetically female that is assigned male at birth (ambiguous external genitalia)
Klinefelter syndrome XXY, assigned female at birth but are men with female looks
Turner syndrome XO, assigned female at birth and are infertile
sexual dimorphism Being male or female
gender binary The idea that gender and sex are the same but, it’s on are on a spectrum
gender expression The way people express their gender by their clothes, hair, voice, and walk (gait)
transgender Identification as male, female, or neither that doesn’t match their assigned sex
transphobia Fear and hatred of transgender people
gender dysphoria distress caused but a “disagreement” between gender identity & assigned sex
gender confirmation when someone behaves or dresses like what people expect for their gender. For example, a girl wearing dresses because that’s what is usually expected.
androgyny Being feminine (expressive) and masculine (instrumental)
gender stereotypes The idea of how boys and girls should behave, boys= strong, girls=caring
genderism people NEED to be cisgender, all gender nonconformity is bad or unacceptable
gender nonconforming How a persons gender identity, race, or expression differs from their cultural norms
gender variance when someone expresses their gender differently from typical male or female expectations.
DSD Differences in sex development, an identity label used by some transgender people
sexism prejudice directed toward women
