CHAPTER 8 KEY TERMSDefinition
pronatalism A belief that promotes childbearing
fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) A baby that is born from a mother who drank a lot of alcohol
endometriosis when tissue that’s supposed to grow inside the uterus grows in the wrong places, like on the ovaries. It can cause a lot of pain and make it harder to have babies.
zygote egg fertilization (5-7 days)
placenta an organ that grows in the womb during pregnancy. It gives the baby food and oxygen from the mother and takes away waste from the baby.
umbilical cord a tube that connects the baby to the placenta. It gives the baby food and oxygen and takes waste away.
lanugo Soft hair that covers the baby’s body
breech birth when the baby is coming out legs/butt first
cesarean (C-section) birth when the doctor cuts through the abdomen(stomach) to take the baby out
ectopic pregnancy When a fertilized ovum attaches and grows outside the uterus (usually fallopian tubes)
miscarriage Loss of the embryo/fetus during the first 20 weeks
preterm When a baby is born less than 37 weeks
amniocentesis When the doctor sticks in a needle into the amniotic fluid to test for any abnormalities in the baby
stage 1 of birth Dilation, effacement, contractions
midwife Educated and trained
epidural A needle that is injected into the women’s spine to help with pain
episiotomy an incision made to the base of the vaginal opening to make space for the bat to come out
vacuum extraction The use of a plunger to take the baby out
Vernix A waxy substance that’s on the baby’s body
Stage 2 of birth Actual birth of fetus
Stage 3 of birth birth of the placenta
Doula Trained, not educated
Embryo clump of cells (2 weeks)
Fetus da baby (9 weeks)
