TermDefinition
Alternative Medicine Any range of medical therapies not regarded as orthodox by Western medicine.
Ayurveda A holistic traditional medical system originating in India that emphasizes disease prevention.
Biofeedback The use of electronic monitoring of an automatic bodily function to train someone to acquire voluntary control of that function.
Chiropractic Medicine Manual manipulation of the joints and muscles.
Complementary Medicine A range of medical therapies that fall beyond the scope of Western medicine. They are complementary to traditional medicine.
Diagnosis A physician's recognition of a condition or disease based on its outward signs and symptoms and/or confirming test or procedures.
Herb Any plant that is valued for its aromatic, medicinal, flavorful, or other properties.
Homeopathy A therapeutic belief that dilutions of medicinal substances that cause a specific symptom can treat an illness that yields the same symptoms. The FDA under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act regulates homeopathic medications.
Homeopath A practitioner of homeopathy.
Prophylaxis Treatment or measure to prevent disease.
Synthetic Medicine A medication made in a laboratory from chemical processes.
Traditional Chinese Medicine Complementary and alternative medicine whole medical system that includes a range of traditional medicine practices originating in China.
CAM Complementary and Alternative Medicine
Acupuncture Based on the medians of the body. Lines are thought to carry energy to particular parts of the body. When they become blocked, illness or pain can occur. The practitioner relieves blocked pathways with the use of needles.
Acupressure Based on same principle as acupuncture. Instead of using needles, the practitioner uses his or her hands to apply pressure to specific points on the body.
Aromatherapy Through sense of smell, various blends of fragrances result in relief of certain ailments.
Garlic Sci Name: Allium sativum Use: Hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, antimicrobial. Garlic is a anticoagulant
Echinacea (purple coneflower) Sci Name: Echinacea angustifolia, Echinacea pallida, Echinacea purpurea Use: Immunostimulant, common cold and other respiratory infections.
Saw Palmetto Sci Name: Serano repens Use: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) Mild diuretic, Antiseptic, Antiinflammatory agent
Ginkgo Sci Name: Ginkgo biloba Use: Dementia, peripheral vascular disease prevention. Poor circulation, asthma, blood pressure, and heart disease Interactions: Anticoagulants, blood pressure medications, epilepsy, and infertility.
Soy Sci Name: Glycine max Use: Hyperlipidemia, menopausal symptoms, osteoporosis prevention, cardiovascular disease prevention. Milk substitute
Cranberry Sci Name: Vaccinium macrocarpon Use: UTI's.
Ginseng Sci Name: Panax quinquefolius Use: Stimulant, diabetes, digestive aid, anti-inflammatory, Treats respiratory tract infections.
Black Cohosh Sci Name: Actaea racemosa Use: Menopausal symptoms, premenstrual syndrome, hot flashes. Potential side effects: GI upset, rash, headache, dizziness, weight gain, breast tenderness.
St. John's Wort Sci Name: Hypericum perforatum Use: Depression, anxiety. Potential side effects: Insomnia, vivid dreams, restlessness, GI discomfort, dizziness, headache.
Milk Thistle Sci Name: Silybum marianum Use: Antioxidant, toxin-induced liver damage. Possible side effects: Diarrhea, nausea, flatulence, bloating, anorexia.
Mind & Body Medicine Based on the interactions among the brain, mind, body, and behavior. Ex: Meditation, yoga, acupuncture, acupressure.
Manipulative & Body-Based Practices Focuses on alignment and proper functioning of various structures and body systems. Ex: Spinal manipulation, massage therapy.
Warfarin Blood thinner drug. Unwanted interaction with many herbal drugs.
Samuel Hahnemann German inventor of homeopathic medicine. Coined the term allopathic medicine for conventional medicine in 1842.
GMP Good Manufacturing Practices
Homeopathic Pharmacopeia Homeopathic drugs meet standards for strength, quality, purity, and other parameters.
Pharmacognosy Study of medicinal compounds derived from natural products, especially plants.
Ethnobotany Study of how plants are used by indigenous cultures.
NCCAM The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
Nutraceutical A food or supplement with added health benefit.
Infusion Pouring hot water on herbs and letting them steep for several minutes.
Decoction Simmering herbs in water for 15-20 minutes.
Cold Infusion Allowing herbs to soak in cold water over many hours.
