| legend | a story about the past |
| territory | a large area of land that is controlled by an outside govenrnment |
| pioneer | the first person from a group who settles in an area |
| plantation | large farms with many workers |
| revolution | when a group of people work to make changed to their government |
| treaty | an official agreement between countries |
| county | an area of land within a territory or state that has it's own local government |
| tax | money people pay to support the cost of government |
| economy | the way a place uses its resources to produce goods and services |
| compromise | an agreement in which both sides give up something they want |
| survey | means to inspect land and find or determine the boundaries of the area |
| cash crop | a farm crop grown mainly to sell |
| constitution | a plan of government |
| ratify | officially approve |
| census | an official count of a population |
| state's rights | the idea that state governments have powers that should be respected by the United States government |
