States Of Matter
| gas | Matter that has NO definite volume or shape |
| liquid | Matter that takes up a definite volume but NO dfininte shape - takes the shape of its container |
| Solid | Matter that has a definite volume and definite shape |
| boil | Transition from a liquid to a gas by adding thermal energy. |
| thermal energy | Energy related to the motion of atoms and molecules; also called "heat." |
| melt | Transition from a solid to a liquid by adding thermal energy. |
| sublimation | The change of a solid directly into a gas |
| deposition | The change of a gas directly into a solid |
| plasma | Considered a 4th state of matter. It is created when a gas is heated so much that the electrons leave the atoms. |
| freezing | Transition from a liquid to a solid by removing thermal energy. |
| conservation of mass | The idea that the total amount of mass of an object will stay the same no matter what phase it is in. |
| Evaporation | Transition from a liquid to a gas by adding thermal energy . |
| condensation | Transition from a gas to a liquid by removing thermal energy. |
| phase of matter | The state (solid, liquid or gas) in which matter exists. |
