Transverse Waves
8th Grade Unit 8
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| wave | a disturbance that moves energy through a medium, like water or air, by repeating patterns of motion, without actually moving the medium itself |
| medium | the substance or material that a wave travels through |
| vibration | repeated back-and-forth motion of an object around a central point |
| mechanical | a wave that needs a physical material (like water or air) to travel through, transferring energy by causing particles in that material to vibrate |
| transverse | motion in which all points on a wave oscillate along paths at right angles to the direction of the wave's advance. |
| longitudinal | wave consisting of a periodic disturbance or vibration that takes place in the same direction as the advance of the wave. |
| crest | the highest point of a wave |
| trough | the lowest point of a wave |
| amplitude | the maximum distance a point on the wave moves away from its resting position |
| wavelength | the distance over which the wave's shape repeats. |
| frequency | how many wave crests (or complete cycles) pass a fixed point in a given amount of time, usually measured in seconds |
| speed | how fast a wave travels, measured by the distance it covers in a specific amount of time |
| electromagnetic spectrum | the range of all types of EM radiation |
