TermDefinition
Academic diction use of scholarly words or terms, e.g. "Kennedy employs many rhetorical strategies in his speech, namely chiasmus, paralleism, allusion , and pathos."
Ad populum fallacy popular appeal, or appeal to the majority. The fallacy of attempting to win popular assent to a conclusion by arousing the feeling and enthusiasms of the multitude. The forms of this appeal are" snob appeal" and "bandwagon"
Allegory using character and/or story element symbolically to represent an abstraction in the literal meaning; a narrative story that conveys a complex, abstract, or difficult message. it achieves this through storytelling. (ex. tortoise & hare)
Alliteration The repetition of sounds especially initial consonants in two or ( as in "she sells sea shells).
Allusion A direct or indirect reference to something which is presumably commonly known, such as an event, book, myth, place, or work of art.
Ambiguity The multiple meanings, either intentional or unintentional, of a word, phrase, sentence or passage
Analogy A similarity or comparison between two different things or the relationship between them. its explains something unfamiliar by associating it with or pointing out its similarity to something more familiar.
Anaphora One of the devices of repetition in which the same expression is repeated at the beginning of two or more lines, clauses, or sentences. It is used to create a memorable powerful effect, to reinforce an idea through repetition.
Anecdote A short narrative detailing particulars of an interesting episode or event. refers to a incident in the life of a person.
Apostrophe addresses an absent or imaginary person or personified abstraction such as liberty or love.
