Figurative Language Practice
| Term | Definition |

| Idiom | An expression where the words mean something other than what they literally mean. Ex: It is raining cats and dogs! -or- It costs an arm and a leg! |
| Simile | A comparison of two things that are similar using the words "like" or "as." Ex: This room is cold like ice. |
| Metaphor | A comparison of two things that are similar by saying one thing is another thing without using the words "like" or "as." |
| Alliteration | Two or more words in a row that start with the same sound. |
| Rhyme | Two or more words that end with the same sound. |
| Onomatopoeia | Words that represent a sound. Ex: Thump! Crash! |
| Hyperbole | An exaggeration of something. Ex: This test is taking *forever*! |
| Personification | Representing a thing or idea as a person Ex: The alarm clock screamed at me when it was time to wake up! |
| Figurative Language | Words in a text that mean something else than what they normally mean. |
