TermDefinition
Absorption The process by which a drug passes through a membrane into the bloodstream
Cumulative Effect The buildup of a drug in the body when it is not excreted properly before the next dose is administered
Distribution The movement of a drug from the bloodstream into the tissues and fluids of the body
Excretion The process of eliminating drug waste products from the body, primarily through the kidneys
Lethal Dose The amount of a drug that causes death
Local Effect A drug effect limited to the specific area of the body where the drug was administered
Maintenance Dose The dose required to keep the level of a drug in the blood at a steady state to maintain the desired effect
Maximum Dose The largest amount of a drug that will produce the desired effect without causing toxicity
Metabolism The physical and chemical changes a drug undergoes in the body, primarily in the liver
Minimum Dose The smallest amount of a drug that will produce a therapeutic effect
Pharmacogenomics The study of how genes affect a person’s response to drugs, helping to optimize drug therapy based on genetic makeup
Pharmacokinetics The movement of drugs through the body, including the processes of absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion
Systemic Effect A drug effect that reaches widespread areas of the body by entering the bloodstream and being carried throughout the body
Therapeutic Dose The standard dose customarily given, which can be adjusted based on individual patient variations
Toxic Dose The amount of a drug that produces harmful side effects or symptoms of poisoning
Toxicity The condition that results from exposure to a poison or an excessive amount of a drug that would normally be safe in smaller doses
