Forces and Motion

Forces/Motion

TermDefinition
Forces pushes or pulls that can make objects move, change direction or stop.
Equal Forces forces that have the same strength and act in opposite directions, resulting in no change in motion.
Unequal Forces Forces that have different strengths and act in opposite directions, causing changes in motion.
Inertia the tendency of an object to resist changes in its motion. An object at rest wants to stay at rest, and an object in motion wants to keep moving in the same direction and at the same speed, unless acted on by an external force.
Transfer the movement or conversion of something, such as energy or heat, from one object or system to another
Friction the force that resists the motion of objects that are in contact with each other. It can make objects slow down or come to a stop.
Gravity the force that pulls objects towards each other. It is what keeps us on the ground and causes objects to fall when dropped.
Magnetism the force of attraction or repulsion between magnets or magnetic materials
Attract to pull or draw objects towards each other due to a force of attraction
Repel to push or force objects away from each other due to a force of repulsion
Mass the amount of matter an object contains. It determines an object’s resistance to changes in motion
Constant something that stays the same and does not change during an experiment or observation
Variable something that can change or be changed during an experiment or observation
Spring Scale a tool used to measure the force exerted on an object. It uses the stretching or compression of a spring to indicate the force applied.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
