| Experiment | Manipulation of the independent variable to see what effect it has on the dependent variable |
| Aim | Statement which explains what the experiment is attempting to achieve |
| Hypothesis | Prediction of the outcome of the study |
| Four types of hypothesis? | Alternate Null One tailed Two tailed |
| Alternate hypothesis | Predicts that the independent variable will have a significant effect on the dependent variable |
| Null hypothesis | Predicts that the independent variable will not have a significant effect on the dependent variable |
| One tailed hypothesis | Directional hypothesis that predicts the nature of the effect of the independent variable on the dependent variable |
| Two tailed hypothesis | Non-directional hypothesis that predicts the nature of the effect of the independent variable on the dependent variable, but the direction of the effect is not specified |
