| Cognitive Neuroscience: | is the interdisciplinary study of brain activity linked with cognition. Can use it sometimes to discern mental activity in unresponsive patients |
| Selective Attention: | focuses conscious awareness on a particular stimulus. our attention shifts rapidly, and we have slight delays in coping with changes. |
| Cocktail Party Effect: | is the ability to attend to one voice within a sea of others. |
| Inattentional Blindness: | is the failing to see visible objects when our attention is directed elsewhere |
| Change blindness: | is failure to notice changes in our environment. |
| Dual Processing: | information is simultaneously processed on separate conscious and unconscious tracks. |
| Parallel processing: | is processing many aspects of a stimulus or problem simultaneously unconscious faster. |
| Sequential Processing: | is processing one aspect of a stimulus or problem at a time conscious slower for new info or difficult problems. |
| Sleep: | is periodic, natural loss of consciousness. Is distinct from unconsciousness from a coma. |
| Circadian Rhythm: | is a regular bodily rhythm that occurs on a 24-hour cycle (is a biological clock) It regulates body temperature and can change based on age and experience. |
| Alpha Waves: | are slow brain waves of relaxed awake |
| N1 Stage | may have hypnagogic sensations you are still awake can move around. |
| N2 Stage | has periodic sleep spindles (little spikes) |
| N3 Stage (Delta Waves) | are large slow waves, deep sleep |
| REM Stage: | is rapid eye movement happens about an hour into sleep cycle vivid dreams commonly occur muscles relax but other body systems are active. Is a longer cycle in sleep clycle |
| Insomnia: | is the ongoing difficulty falling or staying asleep. |
| Narcolepsy: | is the sudden attacks of overwhelming sleepiness |
| Sleep Apnea: | stopping breathing repeatedly during sleep. |
| Dreams: | are a sequence of images, emotions, and thoughts passing through a sleeping person's mind. Dreams incorporate traces of previous days, experiences, and preoccupations. |
| Manifest Content: | is a symbolic, remembered story line of a dream. |
| Latent Content: | is the underlying meaning of a dream. Express otherwise unacceptable feelings |
