| Main Idea | what the passage is mainly about; what is the central action or most important part |
| Theme | the message or teachable moment of the text; what the text teaches the reader |
| Protagonist | the main character of a story |
| Antagonist | the character against the protagonist |
| Character Traits | the characteristics characters possess |
| Physical Traits | traits regarding the character’s appearance |
| Emotional Traits | traits regarding a character’s feelings, views, opinions |
| Character Motive | the reason behind a character’s actions |
| Exposition | beginning of the story; reader learns setting and characters |
| Conflict | major problem of the story |
| Rising Action | story becomes more intense; major tension and suspense occur |
| Climax | major action of the story; most intense portion for the reader; turning point of story |
| Falling Action | less intense; characters begin to learn lessons; problems begin to get resolved |
| Resolution | final moments of story; wrap-up conflicts |
| Internal Conflict | a problem happening within a character |
| External Conflict | a problem happening outside the character |
| Author's Style | the way in which an author writes a story |
| Foreshadowing | hints/clues into what will happen |
| Flashbacks | a character looks back into the past; relives a memory |
| Imagery | descriptions that paint a picture in the reader’s mind |
| Figurative Language | phrases that must be interpreted |
| Dialogue | characters talking in the story |
| Dialect | a form of language specific to a region |
| Point of View | the way in which the author tells the story; defines who the narrator of the story is |
| First Person Point of View | the narrator is a character in the story |
| Third Person Objective Point of View | the narrator tells the story without informing the reader about thoughts/feelings of the characters |
| Third Person Omniscient Point of View | the narrator tells the story and informs the readers about all characters’ thoughts and feelings |
| Third Person Limited Point of View | the narrator tells the thoughts and feelings of one character in the story and discusses other characters externally |
