Atomic Structure

Level 1 terms/definition

TermDefinition
Atom smallest particle of matter that has its own physical and chemical properties
Nucleus the center of the atom that contains most of the mass of the atom
Proton positively charged subatomic particle located in the nucleus with a mass of 1 amu
Neutron uncharged subatomic particle located in the nucleus with a mass of 1 amu
Electron negatively charged subatomic particle located in the orbitals with a mass of approximately zero
Atomic Number (#) the number of protons in the nucleus, determines the identity of the element
Mass Number The total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus
Charge the result of electrons being added or removed from atoms
Periodic Table a table of chemical elements arranged by atomic number
Orbital the regions of space around the nucleus in which the electrons can be found
