Physiological Psychology - study human behavior, thoughts, and emotions
Behavior genetics - study your genetics
Experimental psychology - conduct research on learning and memory
Personality psychology - study anxiety, self esteem, our need for achievement, and how aggressive we are
Child-care givers, how they acquire traits, morals, sex differences and behavior
Adolescents -puberty and parent child relationships.
Life span -relationships, parenting, midlife, death
Behavior geneticists - study your genetics
Experimental psychology - conduct research on learning and memory
Personality psychology - study anxiety, self esteem, our need for achievement, and how aggressive we are
Clinical - help people adjust to life and help problem solve.
Counseling - Treat “disorders” and help with life challenges
Pure research - bringing attention to your college
Applied research - research to solve problems
Social Psychology (sociology) - groups of people
Industrial and Organizational psychology focuses on applying the theories of psychology to the world of work
Sports and Forensic psychology - they put you up and help you continue
Environmental psychology - explores the relationship between humans and the external world. It examines the way in which the natural environment and our built environments shape us as individuals.
Community psychology - Community psychology focuses on social issues, social institutions, and other settings that influence individuals, groups, and organizations
Peace psychology - the study of psychology that seeks to develop theory and practices that prevent violence and conflict
Stone age-spirits-trephination they cut holes in their head to let the spirits out
Egyptians - Ka (looking someone in the eye and seeing yourself) (the thing going around in your head thinking)
Greeks- Socrates, Plato, Aristotle and Hippocratic (Seek pleasure and avoid pain and Humors)
Phrenology - bumps on head that determine your personality

Wundt - first psychology lab in 1879 (psychology was born)
Titchener (Structuralism) - consciousness is broken down into Objective sensations (sight, tase, touch) Subjective sensation (feeling)
James (Functionalism) - Our patterns in our adaptations turns into habits
Freud-Psychodynamic psychology, Father of psychology - Believe that there is no such thing as free will. We are motivated by unconscious thoughts and desires
Psychoanalysis - technique to uncover unconscious thoughts and desires
Watson and Skinner-behaviorism - rewards and punishment shape our behavior and thinking (didn’t agree with Freud)
Gestalt and Humanistic Psychology - Perceptions are always changing-pictures
Cognitive psychology - process how information is taken in and stored
Evolutionary psychology - focus on origin of certain human behaviors
Positive psychology - figure out ways for people to live a good happy life (believe that if you're happy you will flourish)
Eclectic - a combined approach (pick and choose from theories)
Gender - Male and female (used to be black and white)
Gender stereotypes - the expectation placed on males and females by society
Gender roles - tell males and females how they are supposed to behave in society
Feminist psychology - start looking at issues from a female perspective
Sexual orientation - Heterosexual -opposite sex Homosexual - same sex Bisexual - both sex
Race - a subculture with certain identifiable characteristics
Ethnic group - Category of people that migrate to another country but still see themselves distinctive because of their common homeland
Culture - a design for the way people live
Empirical evidence - must have all the facts you gained
Natural observation – monitor a person
Direct observation - in a lab
Case study - do research to get a description of a person or group from birth to present day
Survey – get your opinion on attitude and behavior ( a questionnaire)
Aptitude/vocational -predict what you may be good at
Personality - introvert/extravert, thinker/doer, opinionated/reserved
Hypnosis used to stop addictions, overcome phobias, to give birth
Correlation research - compare to the norm
Dionysians – highly hypnotizable
Apollians – 50/50 Dwell on the past put reason ahead of emotion
Odysseus – rarely
Experimental method - Seeks to confirm a cause in a relationship
Independent variable - controlled by the experimenter
Dependent variable - the changes that result from manipulation of independent variable
Experimental group - has experiment happen to them
Control group - nothing happens, but the experimental group results are compared against
Random - everyone has an equal chance of being picked
Representative sample - a sample of people that is representative of the general population of the area
Phrenology - bumps on your head
Astrology - study the planets and where the planets are (determine your future)
Numerology - certain numbers in programs or in cards that mean something for the future
Palm reading reading the lines on your hand to determine your future
Telepathy - the transfer on thought between two individuals
ESP - knowledge gained independently of senses
Anthropomorphism - giving human characteristics to animals
