neuroplasticity The brain’s ability to change and grow by forming new connections between brain cells, especially when you learn something new or practice a skill.
neuron A special type of cell in the brain and nervous system that sends and receives messages.
nerve cell Another name for a neuron—it's the cell that helps carry signals in your brain and body.
axon The part of a neuron (nerve cell) that carries messages away from the cell body to other neurons or muscles.
dendrite The part of a neuron that receives messages from other neurons and sends them to the cell body.
growth mindset The belief that you can get better at something through effort, learning, and practice.
fixed mindset The belief that your abilities or intelligence can’t change much, no matter what you do.
grit Having the passion and determination to keep going, even when things are hard.
perseverance Not giving up, even when something is difficult or takes a long time.
attention The mental focus you give to something so your brain can remember it.
working memory The part of your memory that holds information for a short time while you use it—for example, doing math in your head.
long-term memory The part of your memory that stores information for a long time, like your birthday or how to ride a bike.
aural Related to hearing—learning by listening, such as to music, spoken instructions, or lectures.
kinesthetic Related to movement—learning by doing things with your hands or body, like building, acting, or playing sports.
mnemonic A trick or tool that helps you remember something, like using a rhyme or a word where each letter stands for something.
