How does copyright affect film? You can't use certain brands in your films due to copyright infringement (many movies have fake product labels printed)
What may allow you to use copyrighted content in a film? Product endorsements
Preproduction asks.. What is the story? (locations, costumes, etc.) It takes a diverse group of people to get a scene off the ground!
What is the 1st role hired on a film? The script writer
Producers have many roles in film True; they cover production costs, work in the business office, help with hiring, finding material, mediating issues, etc.
Who is the biggest producer in Hollywood? Kevin Feige (producer of the Marvel movies!)
Who is the first person the producer hires? The director; the director is responsible for the creative aspects of the film; they act as a creative lead. The director casts actors and key crew while the producer hires everybody
What is the director/producer relationship? The director works under the producer, who is responsible for hiring everyone. The director comes up with a creative vision for the script and is supervised by the producer
Who are some famous directors? Stephen Spielberg (Jaws), Michael Bay (famous for 'bayhem', explosions and lots of action and dynamic shots), Ben Affleck (goodwill hunting)
Who are some famous film auteurs? (they have their own style/artistic vision and genre of film, the 'authors' of said genre) John Carpenter, Wes Anderson, Jordan Peele, Greta Gerwig, Christopher Nolan, etc.
Who is the first person the director hires? The director of photography (DoP). They are the cinematographer and come up with the visual style of the film (composition, lighting, color grading, filters, camera movements etc.) They are the head of the camera and lighting crew
The script supervisor... Makes sure that what is on the original script is captured in the movie; they ensure the scenes add up with what is written (dialogue, setting, costumes, etc.) as "accurate to script."
Who is the head electrician on set? The gaffer or chief lighting technician; they are responsible for the lighting plan and sometimes design of a production; they are in charge of all lighting personnel (lighting technician)
What does the key grip do? The key grip is responsible for controlling the grip grews who support camera and lighting technicians; they help manage the equipment and crew and can help with camera movement (such as via a dolly)
The key grip is directed by.. The D/P (director of photography)
A grip does... Controlling of the lights, and camera stands/rigging and equipment
Who are the best girl/boy? They assist the gaffer or key grip or they are on the lighting department; help ensure grip department is set up and can work with the gaffer to make sure the lighting gear is correctly installed
What is the audio technician? Their job is to capture good, clean audio for the film. They help operate and monitor sound equipment and regulate sound recording and quality; they also help with sound effects
Some names associated with a cast on a film may include... Actor/actress, talent, OCP (on stage personality), lead, top of the call sheet (needs to be present for most scenes and stages of production), and extras (usually in the bg)
1st role of storytelling: CREATE TENSION! (the hitchcock rule)
OTS shot: Over the shoulder (can create a sense of tension)
2-shot Two people are present in the shot; common with dialogue
What makes good video? Good audio and good lighting
Location/ on set production includes: Films/movies, music videos, on-scene news, corporate videos
An on location or on set production entails.. The production is filmed on a set or a temporary location
Studio/established production includes... News, sports, TV shows, church services
A studio/established production entails... The production is filmed on a permanent set or location that does not change; the location usually stays the same
What are the benefits of a studio? In a studio, you can control the atmosphere, sometimes including elements like the lighting and weather. On location, you can't control things like the weather, making it more limiting
Some other crew includes... The technical director (controls the stage/tech staff), the vision mixer (works in the control room), the floor manager (makes sure people on stage do their job/supervise staff), videographer (captures video/plans shots)
Some other crew includes... Editing and audio crew (help with soundtracks) audio mixers (combine the audio of film and other sources to make it sound cohesive; processes audio signals from multiple sources), editors help with special effects and color grading
Above the line costs Costs determined prior to filmmaking; includes cast/talent, director, producer, writer (major production costs and are usually large and not negotiable)
Below the line costs Costs determined after or during filmmaking; can include set designer, key grip, 1st assistant director, costume designer, gaffer, stunt coordinator, visual effects, stunt performer, 1st/2nd assistant camera, DoP, and more. (costs to hire these ppl)
Below the line costs are associated with... The necessary supporting staff on a film and all production costs, including catering, studio, lighting, post production, etc . They are not "key personnel" and are usually in supporting roles
What does P.A. stand for? Production assistant; they can answer phones, lift weight to carry things, assist with catering, help with casting, budgeting, run errands, help prep the cast, etc.
The assistant director is responsible for... Running the set; they help support the director, manage the production, communicate with the team, maintain the script, etc.
The DoP can also... Tell you what you're shooting; they can make a shot list that lists each shot for a particular scene or sequence; they map out what occurs in each scene
What is a micro film? A film that is 1-3 minutes long. They are great for practicing
