Story Elements

Definitions

characters individuals who participate in the story
setting time and place in which the story takes place
plot sequence of events in the story
conflict struggle between opposing forces, driving the plot forward
theme central message that the story conveys
point of view perspective from which the story is told
protagonist main character around whom the story revolves
antagonist character or force that opposes the protagonist creating conflict
foreshadowing author's use of hints or clues to suggest events that will happen later in the story
exposition beginning part of the story which gives the setting, presents the characters and other information needed for understanding the story
flashback a scene from the past
resolution part of the story where the conflict is resolved and the story comes to a close
climax moment of greatest tension, or turning point in the story.
