| Cross-sectional studies | Research that compares people of different ages at the same point |
| Longitudinal studies | Research that follows and retests the same people over time |
| Twin studies | these are studies with either fraternal or identical twins either varying in home environment or hereditary |
| Case study | This is a descriptive technique in which one individual is studied in depth |
| Naturalistic observation | A descriptive technique of observing and recording behavior in natural settings |
| Surveys | A descriptive technique for obtaining the self-reported attitudes and behaviors of a particular group |
| Correlational studies | These studies collect data on two or more variables without manipulating them |
| Experiments | These explore cause and effect by manipulating one or more independent variables |
| Informed consent | These explore cause and effect by manipulating one or more independent variables |
| Debriefing | The post experimental explanation of the study |
| Confidentiality | You must keep the information about the individuals confidential |
| Keep from harm | Protect the individual from greater-than-usual harm and discomfort |
| Deception | Saying one thing and it's the other but must be explain during the debrief |
