Module 6 AP Psych Unit 1

TermDefinition
Correlation A measure of the extent to which two factors vary together
Correlation coefficient A statistic index of the relationship between two things
Variable This is anything that can vary and is feasible and ethical to measure
Scatter plot This is a graph that uses clusters and lines of dots to show direction, correlation, and relationships between the variables
Correlation and causation
Illusory Correlation This is the precising of a relationship where none xist
Regression toward the mean The tendency for an extreme or unusual scores to fall back toward the average
Experiment This relates because it is a research method where you manipulate one or more factors to see the effect
Experimental group This is the group that is exposed to the treatment
Control group The group that is not exposed to the treatment in order to create a base line
Random assignment This effectively equalizes the two groups of the experiment
Double-blind procedure In this situation the research staff and the participant do not know about whether the participant has gotten the placebo or the treatment
Placebo This where they trick your mind into thinking that you got the treatment when instead you just got a “fake”
Independent variable In the experiment the factor that is being manipulated
Confounding variable A factor other than the factor being studied that might influence a study’s results
Dependent variable This is the outcome that is measured, the variable that may change when the independent variable is manipulated
Validity This is the extent to which the test or experiment measures or predicts what is is supposed to
