Statistics

| Statistics | the science of conducting studies to collect, organize, summarize, analyze, and draw conclusions from data |
| Descriptive | collect, organize, summarize; will involve and average |
| Inferential | analyze, draw conclusions, making predictions |
| Population | consists of all subjects that are being studied |
| Sample | a group of subjects selected from a population |
| Discrete | countable |
| Continuous | measurable |
| Boundaries | one additional decimal place and always ends up with 5; upper and lower |
| Nominal | names not ranked |
| Ordinal | nominal but can be ranked |
| Interval | ordinal and intervals are consistent |
| Ratio | interval and has a true zero |
| Random | random number generators |
| Systematic | goes by a system: every kth subject |
| Stratified | you decide how to divide |
| Cluster | use already formed groups; geographic |
| Convenient | easy |
| Observational study | no intervening, just watching |
| independent variable | explanatory |
| dependent variable | response/outcome |
| cofounding variable | influences outcome but can't be separated from the explanation |
