Basic Ship Terminology

Port Side Left side of the ship
Starboard Side Right side of the ship
Forward The front portion of the ship
Aft The back portion of the ship
Superstructure The navigational bridge where it is steered
Funnel Smokestack where the engine exhaust comes out
Stern The aft most part of a ship
Propeller Pushes the ship forward - can have 2-6 blades
Rudder Steers the ship
Bulbous Bow A bulb in the front of the ship that helps the ship go faster
Bow The forward most part of the ship
Deck The outer layer of the ship that you walk on
Hull The outer layer or "skin" of the ship that protects the sides
Keel The backbone of the ship, at the very bottom of the ship
