| Structure | the way a text is organized or written. |
| Sequence | the order in which things happen |
| Theme | the message or lesson of the story |
| Summarize | brief statement of the main events of a story |
| Character | the person or animal in the story |
| Narrator | a speaker or character who tells a story |
| Personification | the giving of human qualities to an animal, object, or idea |
| Metaphor | comparing two things without using like or as |
| Simile | a comparison using "like" or "as" |
| Genre | a type or style of writing that groups similar works together |
| Conflict | A struggle between two characters or within a character |
| Interaction | communication or direct involvement with someone or something. |
| Mental Image | images you create in your mind as you read a story |
| Figurative Language: | language not intended to be taken literally but layered with meaning through the use of imagery, metaphors, and other literary devices |
| Author’s Craft | the language and techniques an author uses to make their writing interesting and communicate their ideas to the reader. |
| Fiction | a story that is not true or is made up |
| Nonfiction | writing that tells about real people, places, and events |
