Waves

TermDefinition
medium through which a wave travels
amplitude the maximum displacement of a periodic wave
energy Ability to do work or cause change
transverse A wave that moves the medium in a direction perpendicular to the direction in which the wave travels
compression The part of a longitudinal wave where the particles of the medium are close together.
frequency In sound perception, it is the number of sound wave cycles per second.
pitch An indication of how high or low a sound is, which is primarily determined by the frequency of the sound wave
crests The highest point, or peak, of a wave.
hertz Unit of frequency
waves any disturbance that transmits energy through matter or space.
longitudinal a wave in which particles of the medium move in the direction parallel to the line of travel
vibrate to move back and forth or from side to side with very short, quick movements.
wavelength Either the distance between the crest of one wave and the crest of the next wave OR the distance between the trough of one wave and the trough of the next wave.
Rarefaction a part in a longitudinal wave where the particles are spread apart
