TermDefinition
Contradict To deny the truth of a statement by asserting the opposite.
Contribute To help to cause or bring about. *This is a verb. It is important to contribute to class discussions.
Convince To persuade someone to do something. *This is a verb. Because everyone did their homework on time, the students convinced Mr. Hernandez to bring them donuts on Friday.
Definition a statement of the exact meaning of a word, especially in a dictionary (this is a noun)
Define To explain or describe the exact meaning of something. *This is a verb. I asked the teacher to define the word I didn’t know.
Emphasis special importance, value, or prominence given to something. *This is a noun.
Emphasize To make something more clearly defined *This is a verb.
Acknowledge To recognize the fact or importance or quality of *This is a verb. My teacher acknowledges my hard work when I turn in a project.
Advocate To publicly recommend or support *This is a verb.
Anticipate To regard as probable; expect or predict *This is a verb
Approach a way of dealing with something. *This is a noun with this definition. My teacher’s approach to reading makes it easy to understand. *It can also be a verb.
Assess To evaluate or estimate the nature, ability, or quality of *This is a verb.
Assume To suppose to be the case, without proof *This is a verb.
Maintain to sustain against opposition; to stay in the same state; to uphold
Perceive To interpret or look on *This is a verb. Some magazines are often perceived to be superficial. I perceived a object floating through the window. I wonder how strangers perceive me.
Establish To set up (an organization, system, or set of rules) on a firm or permanent basis *This is a verb. Mrs. Raethz and Mr. Hernandez established class expectations on the first day of class.
Evaluate to determine the significance, worth, or condition of *This is a verb. The judges at the Olympics evaluate each gymnast’s performance.
Evident plain or obvious *This is an adjective (describing word). It is evident that you did your reading last night. Your answers are all correct!
Imply to strongly suggest the truth or existence of *This is a verb. Kate’s surprise gift of red roses appears to imply she has a secret admirer. The teacher’s smile implied that she was pleased with my work.
Indicate To point out or show *This is a verb.
Conclude To arrive at a judgment, opinion, or conclusion by reasoning. *This is a verb
Confirm To establish the truth or correctness of something *This is a verb.
Context the circumstances that form the setting for an event, statement, or idea, and in terms of which it can be fully understood and assessed. *This is a noun.
Justify To show or prove to be right or reasonable *This is a verb.
Supporting Detail provide information to clarify, prove, or explain the main idea
Utilize To make practical and effective use of *This is a verb. I am going to utilize these words in my writing.
Inference a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning *This is a noun. You can make an inference about something.
Purpose the reason for which something is done or created
Relevant closely connected or appropriate to what is being done or considered *This is an adjective (describing word). Only include relevant information in your essay.

Structure the arrangement of and relations between the parts or elements of something complex like an essay
Respond to say or write something in reply
Interpret explain the meaning of (information, words, or actions)

Central Idea the main point or key idea that the author is trying to convey

Claim the main argument of a piece of writing
Counterclaim a claim made to rebut a previous claim.
Subjective based on or influenced by personal feelings or opinions.
Summarize to express the most important facts or ideas about something or someone in a short and clear form
Evidence the available body of facts or information indicating whether a belief or argument is true or valid; proof
