| Matter | Anything that takes up space/has mass and volume |
| Mixture | A substance made from two or more materials |
| Pure Substance | A substance made only one element or compound |
| Mixture Example | Smoothie, Chocolate Milk, Salt Water |
| Pure Substance Example | Salt, Water, Baking Soda, Gold |
| Compound | A substance made from 2 or more different elements that are chemically joined |
| Open System | A system that allows matter to come in or out, generally out |
| Closed System | No matter gets in or out |
| Law of Conservation of Mass | Matter cannot be created or destroyed |
| Examine | To look closely at |
| Determine | To make a decision/choice |
| Solubility | The ability of a substance to dissolve |
| Chemical Properties | Observed and measured as sample changes chemical identity. |
| Physical Properties | Observed and measured without changing chemical identity of sample |
