Geography Topic 1 7th Grade

TermDefinition
Absolute Location Exact location on the Earth's Surface
Longitude Lines that run north to south on maps or globes and but measure distance on Earth in an East to West direction
Relative Location Regional position of a place in relation to the position of other places
Latitude Location North or South of the Equator
Intermediate Direction Any direction that is in-between the cardinal direction, such as Northwest, Southwest, Northeast, Southeast
Cardinal Direction This is the term that refers to the basic directions on the Earth, North, South, East, West
Global Grid System This is the network of imaginary lines on the Earth's surface and are formed by Latitude & Longitude
Projection This is a geographers way of drawing the Earth on a flat surface
Equator The great circle that divides the Earth between Northern and Southern Hemisphers
Prime Meridian The longitudinal line that separates the Eastern and Western hemispheres passing through Greenwich, England
Scale Bar An important part of a map that tells how a measured distance on a map corresponds to the actual distance on Earth
Compass Rose This mapping tool indicates the direction or orientation of a map. It typically looks like intersecting arrows or points to a star
Place This is a specific location
Hemisphere One-half of the globe
Geography The study of Earth and its peoples, places, and enviornments
