Developmental psychology The discipline that studies human physical, cognitive, social, & emotional development
Operant conditioning Simple form of learning in which an organism learns to engage in behavior that is reinforced
Positive correlation A relationship between 2 variables in which one variable increases as the other increases
Negative correlation A relationship between 2 variables in which one variables increases as the other decreases
Empirical Based on observation and experimentation
Experiment Method of scientific investigation that seeks to discover cause & effect relationships by introducing independent variables & observing effect on dependent variables
Hypothesis A proposition to be tested
Independent variable Condition in a scientific study that us manipulated so that it’s effects can be observed
Dependent variable Measure of an assumed effect on an independent variable
Experimental group A group made up of subjects who receive a treatment in an experiment
Knowledge Power
Awareness Power squared
Critical thinking The art of analyzing and evaluating thinking with a view to improve it
Neuroplasticity The development of new pathways in the brain, based on experiences, and the interpretation and or perception of those experiences
Case study A carefully drawn biography of an individual
Longitudinal research Study of developmental processes by taking repeated measurements of the same group of participants at various stages of development
Cohort effect Similarities in behavior among a group of peers that stem from the fact that group members were born at the same time in history
Scheme Action pattern or mental structure that is involved in the acquisition & organization of knowledge
Assimilation The incorporation of new events or knowledge into existing schemes
Accommodation Modification of existing schemes to permit the incorporation of new events or knowledge
